The Best Advice for Fat Loss

The Best Advice for Fat Loss by Coach Bryce of CrossFit Invictus in San Diego

The Best Advice for Fat Loss
Written by Bryce Smith

I recently read a cool article that talked about my favorite tip for fat loss. Before I share this tip with you, let’s be honest with ourselves for a second: People don’t get fat overnight, so we can’t expect to lose all of the fat over night, right?

Many people want a quick fix – the magic exercises and the magic pills. Yet the magic lies in the consistency of your training and diet. If you consistently eat donuts, cookies, ice cream, and highly processed foods with tons of hydrogenated oils for years upon years, then it can be expected that it will take some time to lose all the fat that accumulated from those poor choices. And yes, I am going to give it to you straight – the things mentioned above are indeed poor choices.

Be real with yourself and understand that poor choices will affect you and your body will try to tell you when you make poor choices. Sometimes, we just choose not to listen. Our body communicates in unique ways, like making your digestion off, causing skin irritations, giving us a post nasal drip; or perhaps your sleep is a bit off or you are finding yourself with a headache or an inability to focus. Pay attention to how you feel and make adjustments to your diet accordingly.

The greatest advice that I can give for fat loss may cause a bit of an uproar, but here it is – Do not get fat in the first place.

GASP!

Now, try not to freak out and hate me for just a second for that comment. I understand that some people have life situations where weight gain may not be unavoidable; people have health conditions, pregnancy, or other situations that can make my advice null and void. And, I get it. There is a period in some people’s lives where they put things aside for a while and a big mac, fries, and coke seems to be easier and it eases your stress level. Just be aware that the choices you make have consequences; especially if they become consistent habits. The convenience of fast food can be a slippery slope; recognize these things as poor choices and learn from them.

The second greatest advice I can give is to surround yourself with like-minded individuals. Are you around people who eat poorly, drink too much, and never sleep? If that’s the case, maybe you can work together to make better health conscious choices and enhance the quality of all of your lives. Or spend extra time with those people who support your healthy goals and less time with the people who don’t. Maybe you are not truly aware how poorly you eat or how little you exercise. Try keeping a food and exercise log and look back at it on a weekly basis. Be honest with yourself and your decisions.

So let’s sum this up for you. In a nutshell, if  you consistently make poor choices with regards to diet and exercise, you will get fat. It’s a fact. If you consistently make GOOD choices with regards to diet and exercise you will have better health, a better body composition, and a better overall well-being. Make good choices and don’t allow yourself to get fat in the first place. That’s the magic everyone is searching for.
